Coin #1 in President Obama’s Historic Moments Series honors the first and second inaugurations of Barack H. Obama as the 44th president of the United States. At the West Front of the United States Capitol on January 20th, 2009, the 56th inauguration marked the commencement of the first term of Obama as President and Joe Biden as Vice President. President Obama’s inauguration set a record attendance for any event held in Washington D.C. and was one of the most-observed events ever by a global audience.
During his speeches, Obama referred to ideals expressed by President Abraham Lincoln about renewal, continuity, and national unity. It was truly “A New Birth of Freedom” for our country. For the first time, the Presidential Inaugural Committee increased its outreach to ordinary citizens and opened the entire length of the National Mall as the public viewing area for the swearing-in ceremony.
