The White House Gift Shop 2016 George Washington
Commemorative Ornament
Honoring the Origin of the Purple Heart

Decades ago, a White House Secret Service officer placed the Official White House Gift Shop ornament on the Blue Room Christmas Tree, establishing a treasured tradition of presidential holiday ornaments. Today, these collectibles are revered worldwide, and the White House Gift Shop remains the only official source for these annual treasures, which began under President Truman in 1946.

In 2016, we honor America’s origins and General George Washington’s valor with the George Washington Commemorative Ornament, celebrating his leadership during the Siege of Boston and his creation of the Badge of Military Merit—the precursor to the Order of the Purple Heart. This limited-edition ornament, meticulously designed by artist Anthony Giannini, symbolizes America’s enduring values of bravery, resilience, and service.

Giannini’s Creation Process: A Tribute to History and Craftsmanship

Designer Anthony Giannini’s journey to create this ornament began with extensive historical research. Giannini delved into the origins of the Badge of Military Merit, investigating Washington’s motivations, the symbols of the time, and the badge’s significance as the first award in American military history to honor individual valor. After this rigorous study, Giannini hand-sketched initial designs, crafting cut-out samples to gauge the “feel” and “physical” impact of the piece. Only once the ornament captured his vision did he move to 3D modeling software, refining his design into a polished heirloom that honors Washington’s legacy and the foundation of the Purple Heart.

The result is a collector’s piece as historically rich as it is visually striking. This “Badge of Military Merit” White House collectible represents Giannini’s dedication to preserving American history and honoring those who serve.

Historical Background: Washington’s Badge of Military Merit

In 1782, nearing the end of the Revolutionary War, General Washington established the Badge of Military Merit to recognize soldiers who had demonstrated “unusual gallantry” or “extraordinary fidelity and essential service.” This was a groundbreaking concept: before then, medals were rare, typically reserved for officers or foreign dignitaries. Washington’s award—a purple, heart-shaped badge edged in silver and stitched with the word “Merit”—was awarded to three soldiers for “singularly meritorious action.” This badge permitted its bearers to pass sentries without challenge, acknowledging their distinguished service.

Although the Badge of Military Merit was largely forgotten after the war, its legacy was revived in 1932 as the Order of the Purple Heart, commemorating the bicentennial of Washington’s birth. The Purple Heart, with its origins in Washington’s egalitarian vision, remains a powerful symbol awarded to those wounded or killed in combat.

Ornament Design & Symbolism

Giannini’s 2016 design captures Washington’s legacy and honors his leadership as Commander in Chief during the Siege of Boston. The ornament features:

  • Washington’s Badge of Military Merit: Symbolizing the origins of the Purple Heart, this badge honors those who served with extraordinary valor.
  • Image of Washington in 1776: The background shows a painting of Washington commissioned by John Hancock, with Boston in the distance, marking his pivotal victory and the onset of America’s independence.
  • Seals of Five Military Service Branches: Surrounding the ornament, these seals recognize the ongoing valor and dedication of the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • Elegant Frame Inspired by White House Interiors: The frame reflects White House decor, blending national history with timeless elegance.

Crafted for Generations to Treasure

Handcrafted in the USA, this ornament is finished in 24-karat gold on premium brass, with vibrant enamels baked to a brilliant finish. It arrives in a purple and gold embossed gift box, along with a history card detailing Washington’s contributions and the legacy of the Purple Heart. This official ornament is a meaningful keepsake, heirloom, or holiday gift that embodies America’s ideals of bravery, service, and sacrifice.

Legacy of the Purple Heart

General Washington’s vision for the Badge of Military Merit—awarded without regard to rank—was revolutionary. Over time, this badge evolved into the Order of the Purple Heart, honoring those wounded or lost in the line of duty. Established by the War Department in 1932, the Purple Heart includes Washington’s likeness and coat of arms, preserving its historical and patriotic significance.

The 2016 White House Gift Shop ornament, representing Washington’s leadership and the origins of the Purple Heart, is a treasured piece of American history. This heirloom reminds us of the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of all who serve in defense of the United States.
