Coin #8 honors the historic and courageous meeting between First Lady Jill Biden and First Lady Olena Zelenska on Mother's Day May 8th, 2022. As Russia presses its punishing war in the eastern regions, the first two ladies met in the city of Uzhhorod at a school that is currently sheltering families affected by the war. After their private meeting, the two first ladies made tissue-paper bears to give as Mother's Day gifts with a group of young children who live at the school.

"I wanted to come on Mother's Day," Biden told Zelenska. "I thought it was important to show the Ukrainian people that this war has to stop and this war has been brutal and that the people of the United States stand with the people of Ukraine."

This is the first time that the Ukrainian first lady has appeared in public since the war began. With a warm embrace First Lady Zelenska said, "We all feel your support and we all feel the leadership of the U.S. President. But we would like to note that Mother's Day is a very symbolic day for us because we also feel your love and support during such an important day."

More than 14 million Ukrainians have been displaced in Ukraine. Roughly 7 million have fled to neighboring countries.

“The escalating conflict in Ukraine is taking a devastating toll. Casualty figures keep rising while health facilities struggle to cope. We already see long-term disruptions in regular water and electricity supplies. People calling our hotline in Ukraine are desperately in need of food and shelter,” International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Director General Robert Mardini said.

At the White House Gift Shop, Est. 1946, we feel that through a collective effort resources can be gathered in an attempt to help offset the devastation happening on a global and individual level. Teams at the Red Cross are distributing food, water, clothing, bedding, hygiene sets, blankets and handing out SIM cards in order for families to stay connected. They are supplying baby products and services for children while also providing shelters for refugees. As fighting intensifies, so does the humanitarian situation and needs on the ground.

We stand with the Ukrainian people and are humbled to help in any way possible.
