Rolling Through History:
A Brief but Complete Story of U.S. Presidents and The White House Easter Egg Roll Tradition
Article by Anthony Giannini, CEO & Chief Designer
The White House Easter Egg Roll has delighted families for over 140 years, but its origins date back to 1878, when President Rutherford B. Hayes opened the South Lawn for children to roll eggs. The tradition was inspired by a similar event held on Capitol Hill, where children would gather to roll eggs down the hills of the Capitol grounds. However, after Congress passed a law in 1876 banning the activity on Capitol grounds due to damage, President Hayes revived the fun by inviting children to the White House.
Since then, the Easter Egg Roll has become a beloved annual tradition, and every president since Hayes has maintained the event—with a few notable exceptions. Presidents such as Grover Cleveland, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry Truman canceled the event during World War I, World War II, and periods of White House renovations. Most recently, the tradition was paused in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, every other president, from Theodore Roosevelt to John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan to Barack Obama, embraced the event, bringing their unique touches to the celebration.
The Easter Egg Roll has grown from a simple egg-rolling race to an all-day festival, with live entertainment, storytelling, and games. It remains a symbol of hope, family, and unity, gathering thousands of children from across the country on the South Lawn for a day of pure joy. Through generations, this event has stood as a cherished moment in American history, continuing to create memories for families year after year.
