In 1782, nearing the end of the Revolutionary War, General Washington established the Badge of Military Merit to recognize soldiers who had demonstrated “unusual gallantry” or “extraordinary fidelity and essential service.” This was a groundbreaking concept: before then, medals were rare, typically reserved for officers or foreign dignitaries.
